Adirondack Wal-Mart Is Coming Whether We Like It Or Not
Adirondack Wal-Mart
I grew up in the nice small town of Saranac Lake, New York. Our only department store for the majority of my life was Ames. There was no need for a Wal-Mart becuase we could get everything we ever needed from Ames or other local business. Well Ames went out of business 4 years ago and now Wal-Mart is moving in with a 121,000 square foot store. I don't even think my high school was that big. The size is about double what most of the people in the town wanted but it sounds like its coming anyway. It's really too bad because now the traffic is going to be so horrible to get to my mother's apartment and getting to Lake Placid is going to be hell. Thanks Sam Walton for getting the ball rolling on destroying my home town.

Man, the Walmart thing is pretty damn sad... there is no way the tri-lakes needs a Walmart. Between this and the condo mega-development in Tupper, this place is going to look very different in a few years.
Sorry Dustin,
I voted yes in the ADE poll as I live and work in Saranac Lake and I'm tired of allways having to travel to Plattsburgh to do simple shopping for my family. Don't get me wrong I am a lover of the Adirondacks and all its natural beauty, but the hard working people of this community and the surrounding area need more than what is currently being offered by the downtown Saranac Lake merchants. It seems that we can accomodate some major retailer in this area. From the proposed buildings characteristics - elevation drawing in a recent ADE issue announcing "Its a Wal-Mart" the design will be in the "Adirondack Great Camp" style to fit with the community. This is a similar design as the Price Chopper and Rite-Aide in Lake Placid. Sorry if my opinion is counter to yours but I can see that many adirondack families are just making it here and between the high cost of housing, property taxes, heating costs, travel expenses for trips to Plattsburgh something has to be done. I would possibly shop the downtown on the weekends more if I did not have to go to Plattsburgh - the downtown is literally a ghost town on the weekends because guess what - everyone is out of town doing their shopping! Take Care and sorry that my opinion differs from yours.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm not going to tell you you're wrong for having one. I am not against a retailer coming into Saranac Lake because lets face it the people need it. I am opposed to Wal-Mart however because of their business, and environmental practices. I think for one of the largest corporations in the world they should be able to cut some of their profits in order to benefit their workers and maybe even donate some money to local communities. I would hate to see local businesses of Saranac Lake that support things like Winter Carnival or Little League baseball go out of business. After they are gone Wal-Mart isn't going to be picking up any slack. I just think SL should be a little pickier and find a more community friendly retailer.
